Opinion: Speaking Positively About Cancer Outcomes Is Essential For Treatment And Recovery

--

When it comes to cancer, one thing I’m grateful for is the positive way in which cancer outcomes are discussed today.

Of all the chronic illnesses, cancer is most feared as immediately terminal. Most often this is not true, and it is terrifying to experience.

Cancer is a serious disease, but increasingly even late stage patients are beating cancer. We have good reason to positively reframe our outlook. While it is true that Steve Jobs lost his battle taking a natural approach, there are others who have died from an over administration of chemotherapy.

I urge everyone to research treatment options and make an informed decision. Though I advocate taking a natural approach, I support anyone’s choice because I believe that our confidence in a protocol can positively (or negatively) affect the outcome, referred to as the placebo (and nocebo) effect and recognized by science in the mind to body connection.

For example, it is common knowledge that an angry thought can make the heart race or the face turn red. Likewise, one’s beliefs about the success (or failure) of a type of treatment can trigger the body’s healing mechanisms (or inhibit them). Thus, I wish to thank those who speak positively about cancer outcomes. A positive outlook is essential for patient recovery.
