Bjork, An Artist Through and Through

--

there are many artists whom i admire. by far, bjork is my greatest inspiration. she’s not just a cut above the rest, she‘s light years ahead.

to me, she is an example of what we’re all meant to be: fully realized human beings, unencumbered by limitation. so many artists have overcome adversity and attained greatness. she seems to have had the good fortune of escaping adversity and other limiting manmade constructs, propelling her along her human potential path further than anyone else.

of course, she’s brilliantly talented.

but she’s opened my eyes to the impact of growing up in a country that promotes individualism and hasn’t been industrialized, with nature, stunning, stark, and threatening, strengthening . of being raised in a balanced, progressive, nurturing family. of never giving up her child-like fascination with and observations of life on planet earth. of living and breathing as an ethereal artist. of imbuing beauty.

by the time the sugar cubes dissolved, she’d explored punk and rock music to the point of being bored, over time exploring edm, the essence of sound itself, and biology (who does that?), returning to her classical music roots that she rebelled against as a child, even reinventing opera.

once, i braved shingles to see her perform. another time i shook record heat and people passing out to experience her music hooking into my heart and lifting me up, taking me for a ride through the cosmos.

every “weird” thing she’s ever done, i applaud. few are that brave and curious. she’d say, that’s what we’re all meant to do. she’s profound beyond… beyond. to appreciate, read the book that accompanied her exhibit at the moma. bjork could easily be that one person whom i would choose to have dinner with, alive or passed on.
